A vast civic space that has hosted mass political gatherings addressed by generations of national leaders. It is overlooked by the José Martí Memorial, a soaring star-shaped tower of grey marble with an observation deck and a museum in its base. Facing the tower, government ministries carry giant steel outlines of revolutionary figures on their facades, images familiar from countless photographs. The plaza's scale and stark modernist architecture make it one of the defining public spaces of the Cuban capital.
