Built into a bed of volcanic rock on the national university campus, this stadium hosted the main athletics events and opening ceremony of the 1968 Olympic Games. Its sculpted earthen banks and low silhouette were designed to echo the form of a pre-Hispanic pyramid, and Diego Rivera created a stone-mosaic relief over the main entrance depicting the university's emblem. It remains the home ground of the university football club and a working monument of mid-century Mexican modernism, integrated into the wider heritage-listed campus.
