Denver's oldest and most historic block, Larimer Square preserves a row of Victorian-era commercial buildings on the street where the city was founded in the late 1850s. Saved from demolition in the 1960s in one of the city's first preservation efforts, the block now holds restaurants, shops, and bars behind restored 19th-century facades strung with overhead lights. Once the heart of frontier Denver, it later declined before its revival. The gas-lamp ambience and brick architecture make it a favored spot for dining and photographs downtown.
