This historic Atlanta neighborhood was one of the most prosperous centers of African American commerce and culture in the country during the era of racial segregation. Along Auburn Avenue, Black-owned banks, insurance companies, newspapers, churches, and businesses flourished when opportunities were closed elsewhere. The district produced civil rights leaders and remains lined with landmarks including historic churches, the offices of a pioneering Black newspaper, and an ornate former lodge.
