This sprawling Victorian garden cemetery just east of downtown Atlanta was founded in 1850 and is the city's oldest public burial ground. Spread over undulating grounds, it holds ornate mausoleums, statuary, and the graves of many notable Georgians, including the author Margaret Mitchell and golfer Bobby Jones, and thousands of Civil War soldiers. Landscaped with old trees, brick pathways, and seasonal gardens, it serves as an outdoor museum of funerary art and social history.
