The seat of New York's government in Albany took over three decades and a fortune to build, opening in 1899 without the dome originally planned. Several architects worked on it, producing an eclectic mix of Romanesque and Renaissance styles in solid masonry rather than the usual cast iron. Its most famous feature is the Great Western Staircase, nicknamed the Million Dollar Staircase, hand-carved with hundreds of faces of famous figures and ordinary stoneworkers' relatives.
