The oldest surviving botanical garden in Africa, established in 1849 on the Berea ridge above central Durban. Its subtropical climate supports collections of cycads, orchids, palms and rare plants, including specimens of great scientific value. Mature trees, a tea garden, lakes and lawns make it a tranquil retreat within the city, and it hosts open-air concerts and events. Generations of Durban residents have used the garden for recreation and study, and it remains an important centre for horticulture and conservation of threatened species.
