The Catholic cathedral of Durban, a Gothic Revival church near the Grey Street bazaar district completed in the late nineteenth century and later enlarged. Its pointed arches, stained glass and twin-towered facade rise amid the dense fabric of the old city. Long a centre of social outreach in the surrounding neighbourhood, the cathedral has served a diverse congregation for well over a century. It stands close to the Juma Musjid mosque, and the two great religious buildings together mark the multicultural character of central Durban.
