The largest mosque in the southern hemisphere when it was completed, standing in the Grey Street precinct at the heart of Durban's historic Indian quarter. Built in stages from the late nineteenth century, its gilded domes and minarets rise above a bustling district of arcades and bazaars. The mosque reflects the heritage of the indentured and free Indian communities who settled in the city, and its courtyard offers a calm space amid the surrounding markets. It remains an active place of worship and a cultural landmark.
