The long stretch of beachfront promenade running along Durban's warm Indian Ocean shore, lined with hotels, piers and swimming beaches. The paved walkway carries strollers, cyclists, skaters and surfers past art deco buildings and rickshaw pullers in traditional Zulu dress. Recently upgraded, it links a chain of popular bathing beaches from the harbour mouth northward. The subtropical climate makes it a year-round draw, and the promenade is a focal point of the city's leisure and tourism life beside the ocean.
