The historic heart of Pretoria, this public square is ringed by grand buildings from the Boer republic and colonial eras, including the Palace of Justice and the Old Raadsaal parliament. At its centre stands a bronze statue of Paul Kruger, president of the South African Republic, sculpted by Anton van Wouw and placed here in 1954. The square has hosted markets, protests and civic gatherings for well over a century. Cafes and tram-era architecture frame the paved plaza, which remains a focal point for the city's downtown life.
