This central recreational park bordering Nairobi's business district is one of the capital's best-known green spaces and a stage for national celebrations, political rallies and public gatherings. Its artificial lake, paths and open lawns draw families, worshippers and joggers, with the city skyline rising behind. The park gained international attention when campaigners successfully resisted plans to build over it in the 1990s. Named for the Swahili word for freedom, it remains a symbolic civic gathering ground at the heart of the city.
