This spiral concrete monument in Yaoundé commemorates the 1961 union of British Southern Cameroons with the formerly French-administered territory. Designed by the sculptor Gédéon Mpando alongside French architect Armand Salomon, its twin intertwined helixes rise around a central column topped by a family figure, symbolising two peoples becoming one nation. A staircase inside once let visitors climb toward the summit for views over the surrounding district.
