This large hilltop park is the green lung of Tunis, laid out in the late nineteenth century on rising ground above the modern city. Winding paths climb through pines, eucalyptus and beds of exotic plants to viewpoints overlooking the lake and the capital's skyline. Within its grounds stand a small zoo, an ornate marble pavilion moved from the medina, and shaded lawns popular with families. As the largest public garden in the city, the Belvédère offers a rare expanse of open greenery and a favourite escape from the surrounding streets.
