The Great Mosque of Salé, across the Bou Regreg from Rabat, is one of the largest and oldest mosques in Morocco, founded in the twelfth century under the Almohads. Its long prayer hall and square minaret dominate the medina of the historic corsair town. Adjacent stands the fourteenth-century Marinid madrasa of Salé, an intimate college richly decorated with carved plaster, cedar and zellij around a small courtyard, whose rooftop gives views over the old city. Together they form a distinguished religious ensemble.
