Bab er-Rouah, the Gate of the Winds, is one of the monumental gateways built into Rabat's ramparts by the Almohad ruler Yacoub al-Mansour in the late twelfth century. Its horseshoe arch is framed by carved floral and Kufic decoration, and the passage behind bends sharply for defence in the classic Almohad manner. No longer a working gate, the interior chambers now serve as an art gallery. It stands near the royal palace and ranks among the finest examples of Almohad military architecture.
