The Bou Regreg is the river that separates the capital Rabat from its twin city Salé, flowing into the Atlantic between the two historic towns. Its estuary has shaped the fortunes of both cities, once sheltering the corsairs of the Republic of Salé in the seventeenth century and now spanned by bridges and a modern tramway. The redeveloped waterfront includes a marina, promenades and cultural projects, while small boats still ferry passengers across beneath the Kasbah of the Udayas. It links the medinas of Rabat and Salé.
