Bab Agnaou is one of the principal ceremonial gates of Marrakesh, set into the southern ramparts near the kasbah and built in the late twelfth century under the Almohad ruler Yacoub al-Mansour. Unlike the city's plainer working gates, its arch is framed by concentric bands of carved sandstone decoration and a Kufic inscription, forming an elaborate blue-grey portal that once led toward the royal quarter. It remains one of the finest surviving Almohad gateways and a landmark on the route to the Saadian Tombs.
