The principal artery of Marrakesh's medina souks, this covered lane runs north from the Jemaa el-Fnaa square, shaded by slatted wooden roofing that throws striped light across the paving. Once specialising in textiles, it now packs together sellers of leather bags, lanterns, babouche slippers, argan oil and souvenirs. From its length branch dozens of smaller specialist souks devoted to dyers, metalworkers and spice merchants. Wide by medina standards, it is the main orientation point through the labyrinth.
