The Agdal Gardens are a vast historic orchard south of the Marrakesh royal palace, first laid out under the Almohads in the twelfth century and expanded by later dynasties. Enclosed by long earthen walls, they cover hundreds of hectares of olive, orange, pomegranate and fig trees irrigated by an ancient network of channels fed from the Atlas foothills. Great reservoir basins at their centre once supplied the city and served as boating pools for sultans. Part of the UNESCO-listed medina, they show sophisticated water engineering.
