The Sqala is an eighteenth-century bastion and gun platform built into the ramparts on the seaward edge of Casablanca's old medina, dating from the reign of Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah. Its thick stone walls, arched gate and row of old bronze cannons once guarded the harbour approaches. Today the restored fortification houses a garden restaurant within its courtyards and offers walkable ramparts looking out over the port. It combines defensive heritage with a shaded, plant-filled interior evoking the old port town.
