Bab al-Yemen is the main historic gate into the old walled city of Sana'a, a monumental arched entrance in the mud-brick fortifications that ring the ancient quarter. For centuries it has been the principal threshold between the modern city and the labyrinth of tower houses, mosques, and markets within. The gate opens directly onto the bustling souk, where traders sell spices, silver, and textiles in adjoining lanes. Passing beneath the arch, visitors enter one of the oldest continuously inhabited urban landscapes on earth.
