The Jameh Mosque of Atigh is the oldest congregational mosque of Shiraz, its foundation traced to the ninth century though rebuilt and expanded many times since. Its courtyard contains an unusual freestanding stone structure once used to store manuscripts, a feature not found elsewhere. Successive dynasties left tilework, inscriptions, and repaired arcades that record centuries of change. Visitors can study the layered brick and tile of the prayer halls and walk the open courtyard of a mosque serving worshippers since early Islam.
