The Tomb of Saadi honours the medieval Persian poet whose verses on ethics and travel remain widely read, in a garden on the northeastern edge of Shiraz. The present mausoleum, built in the twentieth century, shelters the grave beneath a tiled colonnade of tall stone columns and a turquoise dome. Around it lie a reflecting pool, a spring-fed watercourse, and shaded walks planted with roses and cypress. Lines of the poet's work are inscribed across the walls, and visitors come to read and pay respects.
