The Quran Gate stands at a mountain pass on the northeastern approach to Shiraz, marking the historic entrance to the city. Its name comes from the tradition of placing copies of the Qur'an in a chamber above the arch so that travellers passing beneath would receive a blessing. The present stone gateway rebuilds an older structure and frames the road as it enters the valley. Nearby paths climb the hillside to teahouses and viewpoints, giving visitors a sweeping view of the city among its ridges.
