The flagship national museum of Oman, located in old Muscat opposite the sultan's palace and opened in recent years to showcase the country's heritage. Its galleries span archaeology, maritime history, arms, currency, dress and the traditions of the sultanate, shown with modern interpretation and accessibility features. The building combines contemporary museum design with Omani architectural references. As the principal cultural institution, it surveys Oman's long history and its links across the Indian Ocean.
