A medieval fortress crowning a steep hill in eastern Georgia, guarding a strategic pass in the historic province around the Tianeti area. Within its ruined walls stands a small domed church notable for its early architecture and traces of old decoration. The stronghold changed hands among rival lords through the turbulent centuries and eventually fell into ruin. Reaching it involves a climb rewarded by sweeping views over the wooded valleys, and the remote setting appeals to hikers and those drawn to Georgia's lesser-known fortified sites.
