A small but exquisite early medieval church within a ruined hilltop fortress in the Akhmeta district of eastern Georgia. Dating from around the 10th century, the compact domed building is distinguished by its bright turquoise-tiled roof, an unusual feature that makes it stand out among Georgian churches. It sits amid the crumbling walls and towers of a former citadel overlooking a wooded valley. The delicate proportions of the church and its striking colour, combined with the remote setting, reward the effort of reaching it.
