The ruins of an early medieval royal fortress-town perched on a rocky spur above the Iori River in eastern Georgia. Associated with kings of Iberia in the fifth and sixth centuries, it once served as a stronghold and residence guarding the approaches to the interior. Substantial stretches of wall, towers and a small church survive amid the hilltop, giving a sense of its former scale. Long abandoned and partly restored, the site commands wide views over the river valley and offers a quiet glimpse of Georgia's early statehood.
