The Sri Mariamman Temple in Medan is the oldest Hindu temple in the city, founded in the nineteenth century to serve the Tamil community brought to work the plantations of the Deli region. Its towering entrance gopuram is densely covered with brightly painted statues of deities, figures and mythological scenes in the South Indian Dravidian style. Inside, shrines dedicated to the goddess Mariamman and other deities are the focus of daily worship and colourful festivals.
