The Tjong A Fie Mansion is the grand former residence of a Chinese-Indonesian merchant and philanthropist who became one of the wealthiest and most influential figures in early twentieth-century Medan. Completed in 1900, the two-storey house blends Chinese, Malay and European styles, with carved wooden screens, painted ceilings, a central courtyard and richly furnished rooms preserved much as they were. Now open as a museum run by the family's descendants, it displays photographs and heirlooms telling the story of the plantation-era boom.
