The Grand Mosque of Medan, also known as Masjid Raya Al-Mashun, was built in the early twentieth century by the Sultan of Deli and is among the most elegant mosques in Sumatra. Its octagonal main hall is crowned by a black dome and surrounded by smaller cupolas, blending Moorish, Indian, Middle Eastern and Spanish influences into an ornate whole. Stained-glass windows, marble floors and imported chandeliers reflect the wealth of the Deli sultanate at the height of the plantation era.
