Raffles Place is the historic commercial square at the core of Singapore's central business district, laid out in the colony's earliest years as the trading heart of the settlement. Once lined with grand banks and trading houses, it is now ringed by some of the city's tallest skyscrapers, with a small underground garden and plaza at its centre. The square marks the ground from which the modern financial city grew and connects to the riverside quays. It contrasts the city's mercantile origins with its glass-and-steel present.
