St Andrew's Cathedral is the largest Anglican cathedral in Singapore, a gleaming white neo-Gothic structure set on a lawn in the civic district. Built in the mid-19th century by Indian convict labour, its walls were finished with a plaster made of shell lime and egg white that gives them their luminous surface. The soaring spire, pointed arches, and stained glass reflect English parish-church design transplanted to the tropics. A national monument, it remains an active place of worship amid the modern skyline.
