The largest lake in the capital, this broad expanse of water on the city's northern edge is ringed by temples, gardens, cafes and quiet residential lanes, making it a favoured place for exercise and relaxation. Historically a royal pleasure ground and the site of former palaces, its shores hold ancient pagodas and shrines alongside newer development. Sunset draws walkers, cyclists and photographers to the promenades, and a leisurely loop passes lotus ponds, lakeside seafood spots and small fishing boats.
