The historic political center of Hanoi, this broad ceremonial square is where Ho Chi Minh read the declaration of independence in 1945. It is dominated by his granite mausoleum along one side, before which a daily flag-raising and lowering ceremony draws crowds. The presidential palace, the one-pillar pagoda and government buildings lie nearby amid manicured lawns. National parades fill the space on major anniversaries. As the stage for the nation's founding moment, it holds deep significance in modern Vietnamese history.
