A long seafront promenade in central Colombo, Galle Face Green is a broad grassy strip stretching along the Indian Ocean where residents gather at dusk to fly kites, picnic and sample street food. Laid out in the colonial era for military drills and later opened for public recreation, it faces the surf on one side and grand hotels and modern high-rises on the other. As evening falls, food stalls sell fritters and other snacks to strolling crowds.
