One of the largest earth-filled dams in the world, Tarbela spans the Indus River and forms a vast reservoir that supplies irrigation water and hydroelectric power across Pakistan. Completed in the 1970s, the massive embankment and its spillways represent a landmark of twentieth-century engineering in the country. The broad blue lake behind it stretches through the surrounding hills, and viewpoints near the structure allow visitors to grasp the scale of the project.
