Few places compress a thousand years of urban history like Taxila. From the Neolithic mound of Saraikala through the walled city of Sirkap, laid out in the 2nd century BC, to 1st-century AD Sirsukh, successive settlements rose here under Persian, Greek and Central Asian influence — and between the 5th century BC and the 2nd century AD Taxila ranked among Buddhism's great centres of learning. UNESCO inscribed the site in 1980.
