Myoryuji, popularly called the Ninja Temple, is a Buddhist temple in Kanazawa famous for the maze of defensive tricks concealed within its deceptively small exterior. Built in the seventeenth century as a disguised lookout and refuge for the ruling clan, it hides staircases, secret rooms, trap doors, and a well rumored to connect to the castle. What appears to be a two-storey building actually contains several interlocking levels. Visits are by guided reservation only, leading small groups through the hidden passages and ingenious deceptions.
