Tsutenkaku is a beloved observation tower presiding over the retro Shinsekai district of southern Osaka. First built in 1912 in imitation of the Eiffel Tower and rebuilt after wartime dismantling in 1956, it has become a symbol of the city's working-class charm. Its decks look out over the tightly packed neighborhood of kushikatsu eateries and neon signs below, while the lighting at the top changes color to forecast the next day's weather. A gilded statue of Billiken, a good-luck figure whose feet visitors rub, sits inside.
