This large natural pond at the foot of Ueno Park is a rare survival of the lagoons that once fringed Tokyo Bay, divided into distinct areas for lotus, boating, and a bird sanctuary. In summer a dense carpet of lotus leaves and pink blooms covers the water, while an island shrine sits at its center and migratory birds gather in winter. Rowboats and swan-shaped pedal boats ply the open section, and paths around the shore link the park's museums, making the pond both a natural retreat and a hub of leisure in the city.
