Standing beside a pond in Ueno Park, this small museum recreates the everyday world of Tokyo's old downtown, the lively working-class districts of the Meiji and early twentieth-century city. Reconstructed shops, a tenement alley, and a candy store let visitors step into cramped, cluttered interiors and handle household objects donated by local residents. Displays trace the crafts, games, and street life of a community repeatedly rebuilt after fire, earthquake, and war. Its intimate scale counters the grand national museums nearby.
