This double-arched stone bridge frames the main approach to the Imperial Palace and is among the most photographed spots in central Tokyo. Its name, meaning double bridge, recalls a historic wooden structure once mounted in two tiers; the present stone-and-iron design reflects Meiji-era engineering. Backed by pale walls, green pines, and a watchtower, the view is especially striking mirrored in the moat. The bridge is viewed from the plaza, opening to the public only on rare imperial occasions.
