A park in the eastern embassy district built around the Altar of the Sun, one of four directional altars where Ming and Qing emperors offered sacrifices, here to the sun at the spring equinox. The circular ceremonial platform survives at the heart of grounds later softened into a classical garden of ponds, rockeries, and pavilions. Its central location amid diplomatic missions makes it a popular retreat for morning exercise, kite-flying, and tea. The blend of ritual site and landscaped park gives the grounds a dual character.
