One of the oldest museums in Russia, this institution traces the history of the Russian navy from Peter the Great to the present through ship models, weapons, flags, paintings and personal effects of famous admirals. Its centrepiece is a small boat traditionally called the grandfather of the Russian fleet, associated with Peter's early sailing experiments. Long housed in the former stock exchange, the collection later moved to a converted naval warehouse.
