This large domed synagogue, completed in the late nineteenth century, is the principal Jewish house of worship in Saint Petersburg and one of the biggest in Europe. Its Moorish-revival architecture features horseshoe arches, patterned brickwork and a soaring cupola, expressing the confidence of the city's imperial-era Jewish community after restrictions eased. The richly decorated main hall seats a large congregation, and a smaller prayer room is admired for its acoustics.
