Also known as the Blagoveshchensky Bridge, this crossing over the Neva near the historic centre was the first permanent iron bridge over the river when it opened in the mid-nineteenth century, a major feat of engineering for its day. Cast-iron railings decorated with sea-horses and tridents span the wide channel, and the structure has been widened and rebuilt over its long life. Like the city's other Neva bridges, it opens at night during the navigation season.
