This immense curved building sweeps around the southern side of Palace Square, its two wings joined by a triumphal arch crowned with a bronze chariot of victory celebrating the defeat of Napoleon. Designed by Carlo Rossi in the early nineteenth century, it once housed military and foreign-affairs ministries. One wing is now part of the Hermitage, displaying nineteenth- and twentieth-century European art, including a celebrated collection of Impressionist paintings.
