This vast ceremonial square is the symbolic heart of Saint Petersburg, framed on one side by the green-and-white Winter Palace and on the other by the great curved arc of the General Staff Building. At its centre rises the Alexander Column, a single polished granite monolith commemorating the victory over Napoleon and held in place by its own weight. The space has witnessed imperial parades, the revolutionary events of 1917 and countless public gatherings since.
